The Process
Artist / Project Statement:
This design intends to invoke a quiet, peaceful, and bright feeling to serve as a retreat from the bustling city. To achieve this, the pavilion is slightly sunken into the ground and covered with a robust grass-tiled roof. This creates a sense of protection from the elements and sun and a defined separate space. There is also a bright hexagonal yellow stained-glass skylight to illuminate the space and provide some sense of outlook. The materials: light wood, stone, and golden cushions, also fosters a both upbeat, natural, and grounded feeling from inside. Additionally, this design is intended to help people feel more connected to bees through its open design and bee-inspired features. This is shown through the fundamental beehive-like structure of the building, which is made of hexagonal units, from the seats to the roof, has an organic shape, and is designed to maximize airflow: the pillars have open tiers, there is one continuous path that follows throughout, and air can easily flow through the pavilion uninterrupted. Additional features such as the hexagonal honey-colored skylight and honey dipper pillars pay homage to the beauty of the bees and their honey.
