The Process
I created this drawing using graphite pencil, focusing on close observation and gradual layering to capture the form and materiality of the shoe. I began with a light structural sketch to establish proportions and perspective, paying close attention to the curvature of the toe, the tension of the laces, and the subtle asymmetries that give the object character. From there, I built up value slowly, working from light to dark to define volume and depth.
A major part of my process involved studying how light interacts with the surface of the shoe. I used smooth, blended shading for the leather to emphasize its polished texture, while leaving sharper, more deliberate marks in areas like the sole and stitching to differentiate materials. The laces were especially challenging, as I focused on overlapping forms and cast shadows to make them feel dimensional and naturally draped rather than flat.
Throughout the process, I refined edges selectively—softening them where forms recede and sharpening them where light hits most strongly. By limiting distractions in the background, I was able to keep the viewer’s attention on the object itself and highlight the balance between realism, texture, and structure. This drawing reflects my interest in careful observation, patience, and translating everyday objects into detailed, expressive studies through traditional media.
