The Process

Artist / Project Statement:
Cross-Contour Line Drawings:

These are cross-contour drawings of an apple, a donut, and a cat. These drawings can help us understand 3D forms in 2D. This can also help us start thinking about how to approach making our 3D objects.

Final Wire Sculpture:

  • The goal of this sculpture was to capture anything that we wanted to in a 3D form with wire using various techniques. I chose the jumping cat reference photo/sketch that I had previously made because I love cats and I thought the mid-movement pose the cat was in would be particularly difficult and interesting to capture. I first created a rough shape of the parts of the cat with a thick wire. I then used a cross-contour technique to create the bulk of the cat with a slightly thinner wire. Then, finally, I used a fine wire to add fine details to the cat's face: eyes, nose, ears, etc.. I found this medium particularly challenging when compared to everything else we have done this year. It was difficult to get the wire to comply and not move all over the place. It was also difficult to really see the cat when it was complete because of all of the wires in the background distracting from the "front" side you are supposed to be looking at. I definitely felt more accomplished though when I finished, and I am proud of the adorable cat that I created, even if it is hard to fully see at first glance.

  • One thing that I think I did well was capture the movement in the cat's pose. The cat is right about to pounce and is a very lively pose. It was a challenge but I think you can feel the urgency in the cat's pose and movement though the sculpture's form.

  • One thing that I could have done better if I had more time would maybe be to fill out and add more detail throughout the whole body. This would have made it easier to really see the cat form if it was more filled out with wire; however; I decided to create the cat life-sized so it would have taken a very long time and a lot of material to do this.
