Subtractive Sculpture
This sculpture was freeform, so I mostly just made decisions as I went along. As I was carving each side, my goal was to incorporate multiple unique textures using different techniques with various tools. I included a kind of grooved texture on one side and overall kind of tried to show a vein-like flow in in the different 'bridges' of the sculpture.

This sculpture ended up reminding me of bones which I think is interesting. For this subtractive sculpture, I decided to create a human form of someone holding their knees to their chest. This idea just kind of came naturally to me: my goal was really to capture the feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and loneliness of that pose with this type of abstract sculpture specifically. I had a pretty good idea after creating my drawings of exactly how I wanted it to look. After creating my mini model I knew how to use the material well and was able to start this sculpture pretty confidently. This sculpture really came together nicely as I shaped it and the form really turned from a block carved out, into its own being. This process was especially noticeable when creating holes through the material. For example, when I was creating separation between the arms, legs, and chest, the subtracted space began as just a hole, then an empty space with the different parts somewhat webbed together, into completely defined limbs. The process was pretty straightforward, however, as I created the final version, there were a few things that I did slightly different, but better overall. I made everything slightly slimmer and more defined, creating some more of that definition and definition between limbs. When I was done sculpting, I painted my sculpture to somewhat resemble the texture of classical bronze sculptures with the copper highlights on a black base. Although I think most things really did go well, there were definitely a couple of changes made as a direct result of taking away a little bit more than I thought I had. So next time I would certainly be more careful and extra attentive to its size and shape at all times.
