VMRC Exhibition
I am thrilled to share that my mixed-media piece, Birth, has been selected for the VMRC National Juried Art Exhibition. Running annually since 2004, this resident-managed show curates exceptional artwork from across the country, providing an unhurried, welcoming space for the public to quietly connect with art at their own pace.
Showcasing Birth in an environment that encourages contemplation is incredibly fitting. The piece captures the strange unfamiliarity of coming into the world, visualized through surreal bug-egg-babies hatching in a 1920s hospital nursery. To convey the layered experience of entering society, I built the foundation using collaged newspaper clippings and vintage prints, selecting abstract symbols of life like anatomical diagrams, carousels, houses, and vintage advertisements. After arranging these to mimic the lighting of the era, I layered diluted acrylic with a sea sponge to create an imperfect, weathered texture. By keeping the background nursery in stark grayscale, the vibrant golden acrylic and fine oil details of the central hatching bug pull forward, emphasizing how the vivacity of new life stands out against a dull reality.
The exhibition is free and open to the public at the VMRC Park Gables Gallery, located at 1491 Virginia Ave in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
