The Process
Artist / Project Statement:
This sculpture, Gargoyle, draws inspiration from the mythical protectors found on cathedrals, which blur the boundary between animal and architecture. I wanted to capture both the playfulness and the watchfulness of a guardian figure by inventing a creature that feels both familiar and otherworldly. The exaggerated ears, elongated body, and curling tail push the form into abstraction while still suggesting movement and alertness.
Working with clay, I experimented with proportion and surface, then emphasized the hybrid qualities of the figure with layered color. The green body roots the form in nature, while the white and pink head gives it a spectral, almost stone-like presence. Like traditional gargoyles, this piece serves as both ornament and protector — an imagined guardian meant to invite curiosity while keeping watch.
Through this project, I explored how form and symbolism can merge to create character within a three-dimensional structure. It challenged me to think about how architectural ornament is not only decorative but also narrative, shaping the identity of a space.
