The Process
Artist / Project Statement:
Atmospheric Oil Pastel: My goal with this work was to express the sense of regret, reflection, and remorse that occurs after self-destructing though a monochrome scratchboard artwork of my cat, Saturn. She is looking back at the glass door at her own reflection, representing how one looks back upon their past actions after self-destructing having gone through a major change. This is also shown through how she is on the other side of this door, unable to go back. In this past vision, it is also seen that before there was a scrumptious cake, however now there are barley crumbs left, which is meant to represent the self-destructive behavior itself and the tragic aftermath one regrets. I also utilized the scratchboard medium to create a sense of emptiness, sadness, and drama through the high contrast and dark shadows. Another one of my objectives with this project was to craft a sense of movement, which I did though Saturn's turning-back movement, as well as the movement of your eye through her line of sight, from the foreground to the more ominous background.
